Bioluminescence season is here! We’ve been seeing glowing waters on recent tours, but keep in mind nature is unpredictable, so there’s never a guarantee. When the ocean does light up, it’s unforgettable.

🌊 Whether you’re brand new or a returning paddler, this will be a calm, beautiful night on the water.
ALL AGES are welcome!

We’ll meet at 6:00 PM to get launched in time for the 6:39 PM sunset, then paddle into the night hoping for bioluminescent glow under the new moon. When it appears, the effect is dramatically better by kayak. Dipping your paddle and watching the water ignite around you is a whole different experience than simply viewing distant glowing waves from shore.

The chemical behind this glow is called Luciferin (learn more at National Geographic). It reacts with oxygen to produce light, creating a living sparkle across the bay. Curious about how fickle it can be? Here’s a local guide: Bioluminescence in San Diego – San Diego Explorer.

⏰ Please arrive by 6:00 PM at the latest.

💵 Tickets: $50 reserves one seat in a tandem (2-seat) kayak.

🕒 The tour lasts about 2.5 hours and will wrap up around 8:30 PM.

🧥 What to Wear:

Expect a wet butt — it’s part of the fun! These are open-top kayaks, so getting splashed is all part of the ride. You will be sitting in about 1 inch of water.

I’ll be in swim trunks and a thin long-sleeve sport shirt. If you’re sensitive to cold, consider an extra layer.
Comfort is key!

No, upfront and center is the absolute best way to see the fireworks!!! Also, Joe was a great guide- not only did we get a unique experience for the SD night life on the bay as a kayaker, he also shared some curious biological education about critters above and under water. I went kayaking for the first time ever with Joe yesterday and it was such an amazing experience! Joe brings his expertise as an instructor and has a way of making you feel very comfortable right away. You're provided with the works: kayaks, gloves, lifejackets, water, waterproof phone cases, and instruction on paddling and maneuvering. We got to see the last fireworks of the summer super close up, from basically right underneath them, and we even got to see bioluminescence in the ocean! Our group had such great energy and our trip was filled with laughter and great conversation. The experience was equal parts adventure, fun, and magic. I can't recommend it enough. Thanks, Joe!

We have had an amazing time out on the water every time we have gone out kayaking with Kayak Joe SD. I feel safe  and can just enjoy the scenery from a different perspective. It's priceless to experience something for the first time, and I suggest going out to REALLY see some fireworks because seeing it from a kayak near under them is like seeing them for the first time and really puts to shame any other time you've ever seen a show. (Historically and in the future.. seriously set the bar high, prepare to be disappointed seeing them in any other way than in a kayak in the bay..) Joe provides everything you need to get going, all you need is yourself in some clothes that you've accepted will get wet, and a will to paddle your lil heart out. 10/10, recommend often, have been multiple times, will go again, looking forward to other kayaking events with Kayak Joe SD.

No, upfront and center is the absolute best way to see the fireworks!!! Also, Joe was a great guide- not only did we get a unique experience for the SD night life on the bay as a kayaker, he also shared some curious biological education about critters above and under water. I can't wait to do this again. I do recommend stretching before and after as it still a full body work out, though it hardly feels like it.

What an amazing experience! I may never look at fireworks the same way again. Joe is very knowledgeable and explains everything thoroughly. If you've never kayaked before or you're hesitant,  Joe is the guy you want to teach and guide you. You won't be disappointed, just book it.

I went kayaking for the first time ever with Joe yesterday and it was such an amazing experience! Joe brings his expertise as an instructor and has a way of making you feel very comfortable right away. You're provided with the works: kayaks, gloves, lifejackets, water, waterproof phone cases, and instruction on paddling and maneuvering. We got to see the last fireworks of the summer super close up, from basically right underneath them, and we even got to see bioluminescence in the ocean! Our group had such great energy and our trip was filled with laughter and great conversation. The experience was equal parts adventure, fun, and magic. I can't recommend it enough. Thanks, Joe!

We have had an amazing time out on the water every time we have gone out kayaking with Kayak Joe SD. I feel safe  and can just enjoy the scenery from a different perspective. It's priceless to experience something for the first time, and I suggest going out to REALLY see some fireworks because seeing it from a kayak near under them is like seeing them for the first time and really puts to shame any other time you've ever seen a show. (Historically and in the future.. seriously set the bar high, prepare to be disappointed seeing them in any other way than in a kayak in the bay..) Joe provides everything you need to get going, all you need is yourself in some clothes that you've accepted will get wet, and a will to paddle your lil heart out. 10/10, recommend often, have been multiple times, will go again, looking forward to other kayaking events with Kayak Joe SD.

🧤 Gloves (for improved grip and protection)
📳 Waterproof phone case

🐳 My assistance in whatever you need help with. First time? No problem! I will give you extra attention to make sure you have an awesome time!

Come prepared to have a WET butt. This is part of the design of these open top kayaks. It cannot be avoided. I will be wearing swim trunks and a thin long sleeve sport shirt. If you are sensitive to cold, you might want an extra layer on your upper body.
If you have your own kayak, you are welcome to join free of charge.
